A Tamil language teaching initiative, supported by the Indian government, has been officially launched at Penang Sangam School in Rakiraki, Fiji. This program is a collaborative effort alongside the Ministry of Education and the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam, aimed at reviving the Tamil language within the community.
Indian High Commissioner Palaniswamy Karthigeyan announced that two Tamil teachers from India would be stationed at both Penang Sangam and Sangam Primary School in Labasa. Their role will involve instructing students and community members interested in learning the language.
This revival of Tamil, one of the world’s oldest classical languages, addresses a long-standing request from the Fiji Indian community, particularly the descendants of Girmitiya who immigrated from Tamil Nadu in the early 20th century. The proposal to send teachers to Fiji gained momentum after External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s visit in February 2023, where discussions were held with diaspora representatives during the 12th World Hindi Conference.
Commissioner Karthigeyan emphasized the significance of language in maintaining and cultivating culture, as well as enhancing interactions among diverse communities. He encouraged all Fijians to seize this valuable opportunity to learn Tamil. He also expressed gratitude for the support from the Fijian Government and Sangam leadership, highlighting how this community-focused initiative will further solidify the robust relationship between India and Fiji.
This initiative not only aims to preserve linguistic heritage but also fosters cross-cultural understanding, testament to the ongoing support and connection between India and the Fijian community. As Tamil classes take root, there is a hopeful prospect for the revival of cultural identity and heritage for generations to come.
In summary, the launch of Tamil language classes in Fiji signifies a momentous step toward cultural preservation and community engagement, reflecting a shared commitment to maintaining rich traditions and promoting inclusivity.
