The Tamil language is being reintroduced into Fiji’s educational system after an absence of 80 years. This significant development was announced by India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Palaniswamy Subramanyan Karthigeyan, during an event at Penang Sangam School in Rakiraki. The initiative, funded by the Indian government, sees the deployment of two Tamil teachers from India to both Penang Sangam School and Sangam Primary School in Labasa to instruct students and community members interested in learning Tamil.
Mr. Karthigeyan emphasized the importance of reviving Tamil, one of the oldest classical languages with deep cultural roots, particularly for the descendants of Girmitiyas—who migrated from what is now Tamil Nadu to Fiji in the early 20th century. The program is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education of Fiji and the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam, a key organization representing the Indian diaspora in Fiji.
This revival initiative follows the visit of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, to Fiji earlier this year during the 12th World Hindi Conference, where discussions with Fiji’s diaspora leaders took place. Mr. Karthigeyan stated that the Tamil language, nearly lost in Fiji, is now being revitalized. He noted the significance of language in preserving culture and promoting understanding among different communities, while also highlighting the vibrant global presence of Tamil, which boasts over 80 million speakers.
The launch of Tamil language classes is seen as a step towards strengthening the ties between India and Fiji. TISI Sangam’s secretary-general, Gyaneshwar Rao, expressed gratitude to India for aiding the revival of Tamil in Fiji. Additionally, students at Penang Sangam School actively engaged in a flash quiz linked to the ongoing Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz contest, showcasing enthusiasm for cultural educational opportunities.
The revival of the Tamil language in Fiji not only enriches the country’s cultural tapestry but also helps foster greater community cohesion and mutual understanding. This initiative is a promising step forward, allowing generations to reconnect with their heritage while also learning a language that has significant global importance.
Overall, this initiative highlights the importance of cultural preservation and connection in a globalized world, fostering hope for the future unity and diversity of Fiji’s communities.
