Heavy rainfall has significantly impacted the Tamavua water system, leading to a decline in raw water quality at the Savura intake. This drop has resulted in reduced treatment output and lower reservoir levels, prompting the Water Authority of Fiji to respond swiftly to stabilize supply. Chief Executive Seru Soderberg emphasized that the authority’s recent efforts have been focused on enhancing both the reliability of water services and the long-term upgrades necessary to strengthen the infrastructure in place.
Soderberg highlighted that teams are diligently working around the clock to meet the growing urban demand for water resources. He acknowledged that the recovery of reservoirs and achieving system balance, particularly in elevated communities, is a gradual process. Despite these challenges, he confirmed that the Viria Water Treatment Plant is currently operating at its full design capacity.
To further improve water supply to higher areas, the Sawani to Colo-I-Suva pipeline is under construction and is anticipated to be a significant asset once completed. In the interim, water carting continues in regions experiencing low network pressure, although field teams have faced access difficulties in informal settlements, including obstacles like low-hanging power lines and narrow roads.
Residents are encouraged to place water containers at accessible roadside points during scheduled daytime runs to help service as many households as possible. Soderberg noted the Water Authority’s commitment to collaborating with community leaders to enhance communication, promote water conservation, and address collective responsibilities in managing local infrastructure.
Additionally, the authority is conducting an internal review of water carting services distribution and remains dedicated to ensuring transparency in service delivery while aligning with operational priorities and the needs of communities. Despite the current challenges, the ongoing efforts aim to strengthen the water supply network and foster community resilience.
