Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau has secured a spot in Fiji’s 26-member squad for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Papua New Guinea. At 42 years old, Tamanisau, who serves as a Police Inspector, earned the Golden Glove award during the recent FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) in Lautoka, leading the Babasiga Lions to a penalty shootout victory over Navua.
The native of Tailevu is anticipated to play a crucial role for the team managed by Rob Sherman, especially following their strong start in the qualifiers, where they achieved a 1-0 win against their first opponent in Suva on October 10. Accompanying Tamanisau in the squad are fellow goalkeepers Akuila Mateisuva from Suva and Jerome Narayan, who is based in Sydney.
Also returning to the national side is experienced Labasa striker Christopher Wasasala. The squad features several overseas-based players, including Wellington’s Gabriel Matanisiga, Mohammed Raheem, Captain Roy Krishna, Auckland’s Nabil Begg, Sydney United midfielder Leroy Jennings, and London-based defender Scott Wara. Notably absent from the squad are younger talents like Josh Laqeretabua and Nadi’s Joela Biuvanua, as well as Lautoka’s Aporosa Yada, Ba’s Etonia Dogalau, and Suva’s Kavaia Rawaqa. However, veterans Mosese Nabose, Merrill Nand, and Antonio Tuivuna return after missing the first match.
The Bula Boys are set to depart for Papua New Guinea on Sunday, where they will compete against PNG on Thursday and face New Caledonia the following Sunday.
This is an exciting time for Fijian football, as the inclusion of experienced players like Tamanisau and Wasasala can provide much-needed leadership and skill on the field. The team’s strong start and competitive spirit offer hope for a successful campaign in the qualifiers.
Summary: Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau joins Fiji’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers after an impressive performance at the IDC, with a mix of experienced and overseas players set to compete. The Bula Boys will soon head to PNG for crucial matches.
