Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau has secured a spot in Fiji’s 26-member squad for the upcoming matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers taking place in Papua New Guinea. At 42 years old, Tamanisau, who also serves as a Police Inspector, recently earned the Golden Glove award during the FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) in Lautoka. His outstanding performance was instrumental in leading the Babasiga Lions to a victory over Navua through a penalty shootout.

The native of Naisaumua, Tailevu, is expected to play a crucial role in the national team, already having contributed to their successful opening match in the qualifiers, where Fiji triumphed 1-0 against the Solomon Islands on October 10. Joining Tamanisau in the goalkeeper division are Akuila Mateisuva from Suva and Jerome Narayan, who is based in Sydney.

The squad also sees the return of experienced Labasa striker Christopher Wasasala. The list features various overseas players, including Wellington-based Gabriel Matanisiga, Captain Roy Krishna, Auckland’s Nabil Begg, Sydney United’s Leroy Jennings, and London-based defender Scott Wara. Notably absent from the squad are young talents Josh Laqeretabua and Nadi’s Joela Biuvanua, along with Lautoka’s Aporosa Yada, Ba’s Etonia Dogalau, and Suva’s Kavaia Rawaqa. However, Mosese Nabose, Merrill Nand, and Antonio Tuivuna are making a comeback after missing the first match.

The Bula Boys are set to depart for PNG on Sunday, where they will take on the home team on Thursday, followed by a match against New Caledonia the following Sunday.

This update highlights Tamanisau’s remarkable resilience and skill, serving as an inspiration for both seasoned players and aspiring athletes in Fiji. It underscores the depth and potential of the Fijian national team as they prepare for what could be pivotal matches in their World Cup journey. With a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, the squad is poised for a competitive showing in the qualifiers.
