As the World Health Assembly (WHA) convenes this week in Geneva, Taiwan is reiterating its call for inclusion in the global health forum and criticizing the World Health Organization (WHO) for prioritizing political concerns over public health. Taiwan emphasizes its belief that access to health is a fundamental human right, working domestically to improve its health standards while also wanting to contribute to global health initiatives.
Taiwan’s absence from the WHA, influenced by political pressures, restricts the world’s access to its notable medical expertise and advancements. Supported by its allies, Taiwan shares healthcare resources and training, presenting itself as a valuable asset in fostering a healthier international community. The island nation’s government argues that the politicization of health issues, particularly influenced by pressure from China, undermines global health efforts and contradicts the WHO’s mission of “health for all.”
During a recent visit by international journalists to Taipei Hospital, Dr. Daniel Lu, a consultant at the hospital, expressed disappointment over Taiwan’s exclusion from the WHA. He highlighted the progress made in Taiwan’s healthcare system and lamented the missed opportunities for knowledge sharing on a global scale. “With our advancements, Taiwan deserves to be part of the international community to manage and contribute to global health,” he stated.
Taiwan also challenges China’s claims under UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which does not grant China the authority to represent Taiwan in UN venues. Dr. Lu emphasized that under the UN Charter, Taiwan has the right to participate in international health activities, reinforcing its desire for inclusion.
Continuing to advocate for its rightful place in the global health dialogue, Taiwan urges the international community to prioritize collaboration on health issues rather than succumbing to political pressures. This rejection of exclusionary practices resonates with a broader commitment to global health cooperation.
Taiwan’s ongoing efforts reflect a substantial dedication to enhancing health standards not just domestically but on an international level. As nations face complex health challenges, Taiwan’s call for inclusivity aligns with the global objective of achieving better health outcomes for all.
