The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has recently formalized a new Cooperation Agreement with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), aimed at supporting the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner (OPOC) for the years 2025 to 2027. The agreement was signed last week at the PIFS office in Suva and signifies a pivotal advancement in regional efforts for sustainable ocean governance.
Joseph Chow, the Representative of the Taipei Trade Office in Fiji, expressed that this agreement represents a significant milestone in Taiwan’s collaboration with PIFS. He highlighted the Pacific Islands Forum’s ongoing initiative since 2010 to protect marine ecosystems and enhance ocean governance. Taiwan’s support in these initiatives aims to address climate change, conserve marine resources, and foster a sustainable blue economy.
Dr. Filimon Manoni, the Pacific Ocean Commissioner, recognized Taiwan’s vital role as a development partner in reinforcing the functions of OPOC. He emphasized the necessity for collective action in vital areas such as ocean governance, biodiversity conservation, and fisheries management, pointing towards a united effort among Pacific nations for the enduring health of regional waters.
Under this new agreement, Taiwan will allocate approximately $1.045 million over the next three years to bolster OPOC’s initiatives in key sectors, which include developing significant ocean affairs capabilities, promoting youth engagement in ocean initiatives, providing innovative financing for sustainable ocean management, and enhancing ocean literacy.
The OPOC has been instrumental in implementing sustainable ocean governance strategies for the Pacific Islands Forum since its establishment in 2010, and it aims to further advance the ideals set forth in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent during its expansion in 2023.
This agreement not only reflects Taiwan’s commitment to regional cooperation but also inspires hope for a collaborative approach towards environmental sustainability, especially given the increasing global challenges related to climate change and ocean health. The joint efforts depicted here serve as a beacon of positive action, illustrating how nations can work together to forge sustainable futures for their communities and the environment.
These developments come in the wake of ongoing discussions within the Pacific Islands Forum regarding climate resilience and sustainable development, which have become pivotal subjects in recent meetings, reflecting a shared commitment across the region toward these critical goals.
