The court proceedings concerning a 25-year-old teacher from Tailevu, who is facing multiple sexual assault charges, have been postponed. The adjournment occurred during a session where closing submissions were expected to be made, but the State indicated it was not prepared to proceed.

Justice Usaia Ratuvili presided over the hearing, which involved the teacher facing six counts of rape against three students aged 15 and 17, with the incidents alleged to have taken place in 2024. The prosecutor expressed challenges in finalizing the submissions, prompting the request for additional time. Consequently, Justice Ratuvili has set a deadline for the State to file its submissions by February 6.

The teacher’s case initially came before the Nausori Magistrate’s Court in March 2024. At this recent hearing, he was represented by lawyer Joji Cakau from Vosarogo Lawyers, who successfully secured an extension of the teacher’s bail. The matter has now been adjourned until February 13, 2024.

This case highlights the serious nature of allegations within educational environments and the legal processes involved. The adjournment allows both the prosecution and defense to adequately prepare for the upcoming sessions, ensuring that the judicial process is followed thoroughly.
