Rookies from Tailevu North College participated in the Fiji Secondary School Futsal for the first time at the Fiji FA Vatuwaqa Academy court, marking an exciting new chapter for the young athletes. During the event, the boys showcased a spirit of enthusiasm while adapting to the fast-paced nature of futsal, a significant departure from their usual training on a standard grass field.
Despite lacking a dedicated and experienced coach, the team is guided by school teachers and assisted by district players who help impart futsal’s rules and techniques. Sixteen-year-old Rayan Karan shared his thoughts on the competition, noting the challenges faced against established schools like Nakasi High School and Vunimono High School. “This is our first experience with futsal. Although we didn’t have much preparation time or facilities, we tried our best, though we couldn’t secure any wins or make it further in the tournament,” Karan stated.
This inaugural participation aligns with a growing interest in futsal in Fiji, similar to initiatives seen in the broader context of youth sports in the region. The Extra Supermarket Fiji Southern Secondary Schools Futsal Championship, which also features both boys’ and girls’ teams, emphasizes nurturing talent and promoting active lifestyles among youths. The Fiji Football Association’s commitment to expanding the tournament reflects a promising future for the sport, aiming to provide grassroots programs that enhance competitive readiness for schools across Fiji.
As Tailevu North College embarks on this journey, the hope is that their participation will foster development not only in futsal but in other sports, highlighting the importance of teamwork, strategy, and adaptability that will serve them well in their athletic careers. The experience gained will undoubtedly contribute to their growth, paving the way for a more competitive future in school sports.
