Defensive strength has proven beneficial for Tahiti, who secured a 2-0 victory against Vanuatu at Auckland’s Go Media Stadium, earning a spot in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 26 Oceania Qualifiers.
Despite facing prolonged defensive pressure in the second half, goalkeeper Teave Teamotuaitau delivered an impressive performance, making crucial saves to thwart Vanuatu’s attempts on goal.
Tahiti’s next challenge will be a semi-final match against Group A winners New Caledonia in Wellington next March, while New Zealand and Fiji will compete in the other semi-final. In the first half, buoyed by the wind, Tahiti dominated the game from the outset. Manuarii Shan forced Vanuatu’s goalkeeper, Dick Sablan, into an early save, which preceded an own goal by Johnathan SpokeyJack from a corner kick.
This early setback further complicated Vanuatu’s task, as they required a victory to prevent Tahiti’s advancement due to a less favorable goal difference. Vanuatu gradually found their footing, creating opportunities, but their best chance came from striker Alex Samiel in the 30th minute. Other attempts, including a shot from Jordy Tasip and a header from John Alick, missed the mark.
The beginning of the second half saw Vanuatu come out strong, generating several scoring chances. Captain Brian Kaltak’s header went wide, while Tasip’s long-range shot was skillfully saved by Teamotuaitau, who later tipped a delicate chip over the bar.
Against the run of play, a penalty was awarded when Eddy Kaspard was fouled in the box by Sablan, allowing Benoit Mathon to extend Tahiti’s lead with a well-taken penalty kick with 23 minutes left.
Vanuatu still fought hard to level the score, needing three goals in the final quarter, but Tahiti’s resolute defense held strong, allowing them to look ahead to Wellington.
Final Score:
Tahiti 2 (Own Goal 8’, Benoit MATHON (P) 67’)
Vanuatu 0
HT: 1-0
This significant win not only showcases Tahiti’s formidable defensive qualities but also sets a hopeful tone as they prepare for the semi-finals, highlighting their potential to create further success on the international stage.
