Tahiti’s defensive prowess has proven effective as they secured a 2-0 victory over Vanuatu at Auckland’s Go Media Stadium, earning their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Oceania Qualifiers.
Throughout the match, goalkeeper Teave Teamotuaitau exhibited remarkable skill, making several key saves that thwarted Vanuatu’s attempts to equalize, particularly during a challenging second half.
With this win, coach Samuel Garcia’s team will face Group A winners New Caledonia in the semi-finals scheduled for March in Wellington. New Zealand and Fiji will compete in the other semi-final match.
Tahiti started strong, taking advantage of the wind in the first half. They quickly capitalized on an early opportunity when Vanuatu’s Dick Sablan inadvertently scored an own goal from a corner kick, putting Tahiti ahead.
Although Vanuatu was in a must-win situation to prevent Tahiti from advancing, they began to find their rhythm as the first half progressed. Striker Alex Samiel came close to equalizing, while Jordy Tasip and John Alick also tested Teamotuaitau’s defenses.
The second half saw Vanuatu push for an equalizer, creating multiple scoring chances. However, it was Tahiti that extended their lead with a penalty kick by Benoit Mathon after Eddy Kaspard was fouled in the box.
Despite Vanuatu’s continued efforts to score three goals to change their fate, Tahiti’s resolute defense held strong, securing a spot in the semi-finals.
