Tahiti’s defensive strength has proven to be a key asset, as they achieved a decisive 2-0 victory over Vanuatu at Auckland’s Go Media Stadium, securing their spot in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 26 Oceania Qualifiers.

In the second half, Tahiti’s goalkeeper, Teave Teamotuaitau, showcased his skills with a series of remarkable saves that thwarted Vanuatu’s attempts to score. Under the guidance of coach Samuel Garcia, Tahiti will face Group A winners New Caledonia in the semi-finals set for March in Wellington. New Zealand and Fiji will compete in the other semi-final match.

Tahiti started strong, leveraging the wind in their favor during the first half. An early challenge for Vanuatu emerged when Manuarii Shan forced Vanuatu’s goalkeeper, Dick Sablan, to make a save, leading to an own goal by Johnathan SpokeyJack following a corner kick. This early misstep complicated Vanuatu’s odds, as they needed to win to advance due to their inferior goal difference.

Despite the setback, Vanuatu gradually gained momentum, with striker Alex Samiel coming close in the 30th minute. Jordy Tasip had a shot directed towards Teamotuaitau, but it was ultimately saved. The pressure continued for Vanuatu in the second half, where they created multiple scoring opportunities, including attempts from captain Brian Kaltak and Tasip, whose long-range shot was skillfully thwarted by Teamotuaitau.

However, with just 23 minutes left, the game took another turn when Eddy Kaspard was fouled in the box, prompting referee Medric Lacour to award a penalty. Benoit Mathon successfully converted the spot-kick, extending Tahiti’s lead.

Although Vanuatu pressed hard for a comeback, Tahiti’s defense remained resolute, securing their path to the semi-finals and setting the stage for an exciting matchup in Wellington.

Final Score:
Tahiti 2 (Own Goal 8’, Benoit Mathon (P) 67’)
Vanuatu 0 (Half-Time: 1-0)

This victory not only marks a milestone for Tahiti but also highlights their defensive abilities, showing that with resilience and teamwork, underdog teams can achieve remarkable success in major tournaments. The upcoming semi-final against New Caledonia presents an exciting opportunity for Tahiti to further their campaign in the Oceania Qualifiers.
