President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on the Naitasiri Provincial Council to focus on developing strategies to address the rising challenges of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and drug issues in the country.
During the opening of the council’s meeting, Ratu Wiliame emphasized that these issues have reached a national crisis level, necessitating a united approach from all provinces. He highlighted the concerning rate of NCDs, referencing reports from the Ministry of Health which indicate that 80 percent of premature deaths are linked to these diseases.
He posed a challenge to the council members, asking them to consider what actions can be taken and what role the provinces can play in tackling this problem. He encouraged a return to traditional lifestyles, advocating for farming for self-consumption as a beneficial practice that should be revived.
Ratu Wiliame also addressed the pressing issue of drugs, expressing deep concern over their impact on communities and future generations. He warned that drug abuse threatens the very foundations of society, including family structures and cultural beliefs.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of the solesolevaki concept, which promotes collaboration and the revitalization of indigenous knowledge and family values.
