Government backbencher Lynda Tabuya confirmed her commitment to the Coalition Government on Thursday while revealing that she has faced calls to lead her own political party. Speaking during the parliamentary debate on the President’s Address, Tabuya acknowledged that various individuals had urged her to consider leaving the Coalition, with some suggesting she form or join another party altogether.

Tabuya, a prominent figure in the People’s Alliance Party and one of its top polling politicians from the 2022 elections, expressed her unwavering support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. She recognized the frustrations around the pace of change but emphasized the importance of understanding the achievements made under Rabuka’s leadership, including the restoration of democracy after what she termed “16 years of dictatorship.”

“While we must indeed strive for efficiency and speed in achieving our goals, we cannot disregard the groundwork that has already been laid,” she stated, reiterating the need for patience as the government works towards addressing the country’s challenges.

This announcement aligns with recent discussions in Fiji’s political landscape addressing party unity and individual commitments to public service. Tabuya’s previous statements have consistently focused on her dedication to improving the lives of Fijians, particularly vulnerable groups, and her commitment to continuing the essential work initiated by the current government.

As these dialogues unfold, they highlight not only the complexities within political dynamics but also the resilience of leaders like Tabuya who navigate personal and professional scrutiny while maintaining their focus on public service. Such a commitment to unity and constructive dialogue offers a hopeful outlook for ongoing governance efforts in Fiji, promoting accountability and a shared vision for the future.
