Tabuya’s Fate in the Balance: PA Party’s Disciplinary Drama Unfolds

The former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, is set to learn about her future within the People’s Alliance (PA) party in the next three weeks. A meeting of the party’s executive committee took place at their headquarters in Suva to initiate her disciplinary hearing.

This marks Tabuya’s second disciplinary review within the party. Earlier in February, she was subject to scrutiny due to allegations linked to a sex and drug scandal concerning another minister, which resulted in her ousting as deputy leader. The party later issued a statement in March indicating that the scandal had caused “potentially irreparable damage” to its reputation.

Tabuya’s current situation is a consequence of a leaked explicit video that surfaced on Christmas Eve, which she has acknowledged as genuine. She stated the video was meant for her then-husband, Robert Semaan, from whom she divorced in 2016, as per an investigation by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial position shortly after the video’s release.

Sila Balawa, the PA’s general secretary, confirmed that the disciplinary process will follow the party’s constitution. The committee has 21 days to complete its review and provide findings, ensuring the process is independent and maintains integrity. Ms. Tabuya will be allowed to present her perspective during this hearing. The identities of the current disciplinary committee members have not been revealed, though a prior committee included notable figures such as the Minister for Lands.

In a challenging time for Lynda Tabuya, it is important to recognize the significance of the party’s commitment to a fair process. This could serve as an opportunity for her to address the allegations head-on and potentially rebuild her political career if the outcomes are favorable.

Summary: Lynda Tabuya faces another disciplinary review within the People’s Alliance party, following previously damaging allegations. She will have the chance to present her side in a process set to conclude in 21 days. The PA emphasizes maintaining integrity in the disciplinary proceedings.
