The former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, is awaiting a decision regarding her future within the People’s Alliance (PA) party over the next 21 days. This follows a meeting of the party’s executive committee in Suva, which aimed to formalize her disciplinary hearing.
Tabuya is facing her second disciplinary review after being previously scrutinized in February for allegations related to a sex and drug scandal with another minister, which ultimately resulted in her being removed as the party’s deputy leader. In a statement from March, the PA described the scandal as having caused “potentially irreparable damage” to its reputation.
The recent controversy involves a leaked explicit video from Christmas Eve, which Tabuya confirmed was genuine. She stated that the video was meant for her former husband, Robert Semaan, from whom she divorced in 2016. As a result of the leak, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial position on December 26.
The PA’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, announced that the disciplinary process will adhere to the party’s constitution and emphasized the need for independence and integrity throughout the review. The committee has 21 days to conclude its findings, during which Tabuya will be given an opportunity to present her perspective.
The identities of the current committee members remain confidential; however, it has previously included notable figures within the party.
As this process unfolds, it showcases the PA’s commitment to an independent and fair review, allowing Tabuya the chance to voice her side in an effort to maintain transparency and accountability within the party structure.
