Tabuya’s Controversial Comments Ignite Cabinet Tension

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka avoided answering whether any measures would be taken against Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, due to her insubordination. Ms. Tabuya recently spoke out about the possibility of reintroducing the death penalty to deter drug trafficking, particularly concerning Fiji’s role as a transit point for illegal drugs, an issue that was expected to be addressed by the Cabinet first.

Earlier in the week, Mr. Rabuka mentioned that the Cabinet would handle the matter regarding Ms. Tabuya’s comments. She has a history of disregarding Cabinet protocols, raising calls for her dismissal from her ministerial position.

In a recent interview, Mr. Rabuka stated that he did not wish to make premature judgments on the situation. “The issue of Lynda Tabuya has not been dealt with,” he noted. “I have not been in Fiji long enough to address the issue. It was supposed to be dealt with by the Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday).”

He expressed regret that Ms. Tabuya shared her views publicly before the Cabinet had a chance to discuss them.
