Beyond the headline

Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya has called on journalists and commentators to focus on asking pertinent questions to the appropriate authorities, amid the growing public conversation surrounding the arrest of Charlie Charters. In a recent social media statement, Tabuya emphasized the significance of investigative journalism that is firmly rooted in the rule of law and institutional accountability, urging reporters not to shift all inquiries towards the Prime Minister when the responsibility lies elsewhere.

“Let’s see some more investigative journalism and ask the right questions of the right people,” she remarked. Tabuya highlighted that it is unproductive to constantly demand answers from the Prime Minister, especially regarding situations that the government may not have the capacity to address according to the law.

Her message underlines the role of the media in fostering a more informed dialogue and establishes a clear expectation for accountability within government structures. This call to action advocates for a more nuanced approach in journalism, aiming to enrich public discourse and ensure that scrutiny is directed appropriately. By championing this perspective, Tabuya hopes to inspire a more responsible and effective journalism landscape that serves the public interest.
