Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, has publicly endorsed Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of the House, as the next President of Fiji.
In her statement, Ms. Tabuya highlighted Ratu Naiqama’s leadership and his advocacy for increased representation of women in leadership roles. She noted her positive experiences working with him during his time as Opposition Leader, Leader of Government Business, and as Speaker.
“Throughout these roles, I have witnessed his competent and equitable leadership, reflecting a strong commitment to gender equality and women’s leadership,” Ms. Tabuya remarked. She added that she has always felt like an equal partner in decision-making processes under his guidance.
“Ratu Naiqama has consistently made space for women leaders to be visible and recognized their rightful place at the decision-making table,” she continued. “To dismantle patriarchy, we must have male champions for gender equality, and I firmly believe that the honorable Speaker is one such advocate. I am confident he will carry this vision to the State House as Fiji’s next President.”
Ratu Naiqama has accepted Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s nomination to serve as the government’s candidate for President, succeeding Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, who recently withdrew his nomination. Parliament is set to vote for the new President on October 31.
