The iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in partnership with the Environment Ministry, has implemented a new requirement for the import and export of ‘tabua,’ or whale’s tooth, beginning January of this year. This item holds significant cultural value for the iTaukei community in Fiji. The decision aims to enhance enforcement surrounding the trade of tabua, underscoring its importance in traditional practices and the need for responsible management.

It’s crucial to highlight that the import and export of tabua into the United States is strictly prohibited, with no exceptions. While there is no specific quota on the number of tabua that can be imported, the Ministry is monitoring an export limit of 16 tabuas each month. Individuals wishing to export tabua must obtain the necessary import permissions from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and adhere to the regulations of their destination country.

The authorities will issue approval letters and permits on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis, so it is advisable for those planning to take tabua overseas to arrange this well in advance. Last-minute requests may run into quota issues, which could complicate their export plans.

In line with global conservation efforts, all community members are encouraged to follow the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES) and comply with national Customs Regulations.

This initiative aims to preserve the cultural significance of the tabua while ensuring sustainable practices that align with environmental conservation. By regulating its trade, the government seeks to protect this important cultural artifact for future generations while promoting awareness for conservation efforts.

Collectively, these measures reflect a commitment to balancing cultural heritage with environmental responsibility, highlighting the importance of such artifacts in modern society.
