Former Pacific sprint champion Banuve Tabakaucoro is poised to bring a transformative approach to athletics at Queen Victoria School (QVS) by implementing a structured off-season training program for the first time in the school’s history. This initiative represents a critical change in the school’s strategy aimed at enhancing the team’s competitiveness at the national level.

Tabakaucoro expressed enthusiasm about the new training system, acknowledging the adaptability of the students at QVS. “This is new to QVS, so I’m just trying to rope them into the system as well,” he explained, highlighting the high level of discipline among the athletes. “They’re very easy to work with. It’s just such a pleasure to work with.”

While the initiative has generated excitement, Tabakaucoro noted that he has faced some resistance from certain QVS stakeholders, particularly given his background as a former student of Marist Brothers High School. “Still trying to rope in some of the old boys, who understandably are still a bit standoffish. But I think I need to prove myself before we can really rally in all the support,” he commented.

Despite these challenges, Tabakaucoro remains committed to showcasing the results of his training through the athletes’ performances. “Right now, I’m just going to keep my head down and just keep working,” he stated, emphasizing his determination to earn the trust and support of the wider QVS community.

Last year, QVS secured a commendable third place overall, amassing 26 medals, with notable achievements including winning Gold in the Intermediate Boys 4x100m relay and securing a podium finish in the senior boys 200m. Tabakaucoro’s influence has already been evident since he took on the role of sprints coach, underscoring the potential for even greater success as he implements this new training framework. His proactive steps signal a hopeful future for QVS athletics, with the promise of cultivating a new generation of talented athletes.
