The recent round of the 2024/2025 Suva Women’s T20 League held at Albert Park in Suva last Saturday showcased an array of competitive matches among eight teams. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as players returned from the Christmas and New Year break, eager to showcase their talent on the field.

The standout match featured Nausori Majidez, who secured a decisive 57-run victory against the Black Ducks. The Majidez team set a formidable total of 136 runs while only conceding two wickets in their 20 overs. In another remarkable performance, the Veiyasana Stars won by 10 wickets against Lami Lights, chasing down a target of 54 runs in just 6.5 overs, while the Lights could only manage 53 runs.

In the day’s final match, the Black Ducks came out on top against Sarafui Sinas, winning by six wickets. The Black Ducks scored 116 runs, successfully edging past Sinas’ total of 113 runs.

Cricket Fiji President Sitiveni Rokoro emphasized the league’s critical role as a preparation ground for selecting players for the inaugural Four Nations tournament, scheduled to take place in New Caledonia in March. With only two rounds remaining before Suva’s teams clash with the finalists from Nadi, the competition is heating up, spurring teams to strive for top positions.

This league marks an essential phase for women’s cricket in Fiji, fostering talent development while also preparing players for upcoming international competitions. The anticipation for the next round of matches, set for January 15, adds to the excitement surrounding the league.

Looking ahead, Fiji is also preparing to host the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier later this year, where teams from the region will compete for a chance to secure places in the 2026 Women’s World Cup. This reflects a broader commitment to enhancing women’s cricket in Fiji and signifies a hopeful future for the sport.

In summary, the Suva Women’s T20 League is not just a local competition; it plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of women’s cricket in Fiji and fostering recognition and support for female athletes in the region. The ongoing league and upcoming international opportunities signal a promising trajectory for the sport and its players.
