Sydney Sweeney is addressing the backlash surrounding her recent American Eagle ad campaign, which sparked controversy due to its seemingly innocuous wordplay of “good genes” vs. “good jeans.” In an interview with GQ, Sweeney emphasized that she is not there to dictate opinions but rather to offer new perspectives. “I know who I am. I know what I value,” she stated, reflecting on the importance of self-identity amidst public scrutiny.

The campaign, titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” generated a firestorm of criticism from those who claimed it glorified genetic superiority, particularly because Sweeney, a blonde, blue-eyed woman, was positioned at the center of the advertisement. Critics on social media swiftly condemned the messaging, equating it to eugenics. However, several prominent figures, including conservative personalities Megyn Kelly and JD Vance, came to her defense, viewing the backlash as a manifestation of cancel culture.

Responding to the controversy, Sweeney noted, “I did a jean ad,” acknowledging the surprising reaction it received while reiterating her love for jeans, which she wears daily. While addressing the outcry, she expressed her intent not to engage directly with the negative commentary, choosing instead to focus on her work and the positive accomplishments that arose from the ad, including a reported increase in American Eagle’s stock numbers following its release.

Sweeney also commented on the surreal nature of being at the center of a national debate, mentioning her decision to distance herself from social media and news during filming. Despite pulling back from the digital chatter, she observed that various media reports about the ad were exaggerated, claiming that American Eagle’s actual performance was misrepresented.

Currently, Sweeney is promoting her biopic “Christy,” about the trailblazing professional boxer Christy Martin, while maintaining that outside opinions will not hinder her creative pursuits. She expressed hope that anyone hesitant to engage with her work due to the ad controversy would still appreciate its artistic value.

American Eagle defended their campaign by stating, “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” reinforcing their commitment to celebrating the distinct ways that people wear and enjoy their denim. This situation underscores the significance of standing firm in personal and professional identity while navigating the complexities of public life, offering a reminder that authentic self-expression is essential in the face of criticism.
