A Sydney mother is grappling with profound grief following the tragic stabbing death of her daughter, Anaseini Nai Waqavuki. Saini Rokoiwaca expressed that the devastating loss has left an unfillable void in their family, particularly affecting Waqavuki’s three children: Joshua, Salote, and Rupeni.
Anaseini, who left Fiji in 2018, had maintained a close bond with her children through regular video calls and messaging. Rokoiwaca recounted that their last conversation occurred on Saturday around midday, after which Salote messaged her again later that night, unaware it would mark their final exchange. “I contacted her earlier that day and she mentioned she would message later due to work. Around midnight, her daughter Salote checked in on me, asking how I was, before inquiring about her brothers and passing on my love,” Rokoiwaca shared.
During her last visit to Australia, Rokoiwaca felt compelled to advise her daughter to end what she identified as a toxic relationship. Tragically, she never anticipated the situation would escalate to violence. “I noticed concerning behaviors from her partner and told her, ‘please think about your children and leave this relationship.’ I never imagined it would reach this tragic end. I deeply miss her,” she said.
Waqavuki had also been working on plans to move her children abroad for better educational opportunities, starting with her eldest son Joshua moving to Australia. Salote and Rupeni were to follow later. As the new academic year approaches, Rokoiwaca is finding it particularly challenging without her daughter, who played an integral role in their lives. “She was actively involved, supporting her kids as if she were physically there. The teachers knew her well, her son participated in rugby, and we always planned together for their schooling needs. Now, I truly don’t know how to manage this situation without her,” she lamented.
As a grieving mother who lost her daughter to alleged domestic violence, Rokoiwaca is calling on women to leave at the first hint of a toxic relationship and urges men to show more compassion and understanding to prevent such situations from escalating into violence. Her poignant message serves as a reminder of the often unseen struggles faced in domestic situations, highlighting the vital importance of awareness and proactive measures for the safety of individuals and families.
