Golfers aged 50 and above are preparing for the highly anticipated Western Seniors Open, set to take place on May 24 at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club. This event, organized by Golf Fiji in collaboration with Kriz Signage and Five Squares, will feature not only senior golfers but also a separate category for those under 50, fostering inclusivity in the sport.
The tournament has an entry fee of $100, which includes lunch, and will showcase competitive play across A, B, and C grade net categories for both men and women, along with other novelty prizes. The competition will follow a stroke play format, with registration beginning at 9 AM and a shotgun start planned for 9:30 AM.
“Golf is a sport that encourages participation at any age, and the Western Seniors Open is a perfect opportunity for our senior golfers to display their talents while promoting lifelong participation in the game,” stated Amitesh Chandra, President of Golf Fiji. He expresses enthusiasm about the growing interest in the tournament, emphasizing its role in bridging generations within the golfing community.
The event will be limited to 80 players based on a first-paid basis, with registrations closing on May 22. There may be a possibility for late entries depending on space availability.
This upcoming tournament is part of a broader trend in Fiji’s golfing scene, where increasing participation from older golfers is noted, as seen in events like the Swire Shipping Fiji Senior Golf Open. These gatherings not only provide a competitive environment but also encourage social interaction, mental well-being, and community bonding, proving age is no barrier to enjoying the sport.
Fostering a diverse and inclusive golfing community in Fiji presents a hopeful outlook for the future of the sport, where players of all ages can engage and connect through their shared love of golf.
