The initiative for Fiji’s representation at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau is gaining momentum, with the first of three swimming trials conducted last Saturday at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva. Eugene Panuve, treasurer of Fiji Swimming, reported that 23 local swimmers from five clubs took part in this short course mini-meet, which serves as the initial stage for team selection.

“This is the first of three trials leading to our final selection in April,” Panuve explained. The ultimate team will consist of 16 swimmers — eight men and eight women, divided evenly with four under-18 and four over-18 athletes in each gender category. The event’s focus on nurturing younger talent aims to provide them with invaluable exposure and experience.

Panuve underscored that only swimmers who compete in these trials will be eligible for selection, which has intensified the competition for the 16 spots. “It’s encouraging to see 23 vying for just 16 places,” he added, reflecting the growing interest and commitment among the swimmers.

The remaining trials will lead to a final selection event on April 13, with preparations for the selected athletes being finalized by May. The Pacific Mini Games are scheduled to take place from June 29 to July 9, promising an exciting opportunity for the athletes to shine.

Swimmers must also meet specific performance criteria and have prior competition experience in Oceania or international events, reinforcing the competitive nature of this selection process.

Panuve expressed optimism about the progress made so far, commending the enthusiasm shown by the participants. “The turnout for the first trial was good. It’s a solid start, considering what’s at stake,” he remarked.

As Fiji Swimming anticipates the next two trials, the commitment of these athletes to their sport and the possibility of competing at an international level not only inspires dreams of personal achievement but also reflects a broader hope for enhancing Fiji’s stature in regional sports. The community’s encouragement and the focused training ahead ensure that these athletes are one step closer to representing their nation with pride at the upcoming Mini Games.
