A timely response by firefighters averted a potential disaster as they prevented a raging fire from destroying homes and businesses near Autoworld Trading Fiji Ltd’s warehouse in Vatuwaqa. The fire, which erupted before 6 am and was fueled by strong winds, completely engulfed the warehouse, including its garage and all the equipment and vehicles inside.

Provina Temo, a resident living adjacent to the warehouse, described the chaotic scene as neighbors sounded alarms around 6 am. “We were asleep and didn’t know when the fire started,” Temo recounted. “By the time we rushed outside, the flames were fiercely burning at the back of the building, dangerously close to our house.”

Amidst the chaos, Temo’s family quickly evacuated, prioritizing the removal of hazardous materials like gas cylinders to minimize risks. “It was terrifying. The flames were high, and we were really worried about our home. We’re grateful it was spared and thankful no one was hurt. My mother-in-law and others were in tears, but we thank God for our safety,” Temo expressed.

Both the National Fire Authority and the police are currently investigating the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage sustained.

This incident is reminiscent of recent fires in Suva, where the response and challenges faced by firefighters were similarly highlighted. Previous incidents, such as the large fire at the Gokal Group warehouse, have emphasized the critical need for adequate water pressure and accessibility. These events continue to underscore the importance of fire safety protocols and the need for infrastructure improvements in the community to prevent future disasters.

Despite the destruction, the swift actions of firefighters reflect their dedication and the crucial role they play in protecting the community. Such responses not only help to minimize damage but also serve as wake-up calls for the community to enhance fire safety measures, ensuring the resilience and readiness of residents and businesses alike.
