Avenai Naqei, a father of five from Malolo Sector in Nadi, has expressed the importance of continued government support for sugarcane farmers. He was among 21 farmers who received aid through the New Farmers/Lease Premium Renewal Assistance Programme during a recent event at the Sugar House in Lautoka. Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, presented the certificates and emphasized the government’s commitment to assisting both new and existing farmers.

Mr. Naqei noted that this initiative not only supports new entrants to the industry but also secures land tenure for established farmers, giving them the opportunity to expand their operations. He highlighted that secure access to land is paramount for a flourishing agricultural sector and described the government’s ongoing efforts to address land lease challenges as crucial for the future of Fiji’s sugar industry.

Moreover, Daya Chand, a farmer from Moto, Ba, echoed Mr. Naqei’s sentiments about the positive effects of these programs on livelihoods and food security. He urged collaboration among all stakeholders, including the Fiji Sugar Corporation and industry leaders, to strengthen the sector for a prosperous future.

Minister Singh also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to revitalizing the sugar industry through financial measures, announcing an allocation of $1 million for the 2024-2025 financial year to assist more farmers. To date, a total of 64 farmers have benefited from this year’s grant program, aimed at enhancing productivity and ensuring the viability of the industry.

In addition to the assistance program, various initiatives have been established, such as the Farmers Incentive Programme, offering bonuses for increased production, and subsidies for harvesting costs, aimed at addressing operational challenges faced by farmers.

Comment: The government’s proactive approach towards supporting sugarcane farmers in Fiji reflects a positive trajectory for the agricultural sector. By ensuring secure land access and providing financial support, they are fostering an environment where both new and established farmers can thrive, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic resilience.

This commitment to collaboration and innovation heralds a hopeful future for Fiji’s sugar industry, positioning it for sustainable growth and improved livelihoods in the agriculture community.
