The Sugar Industry Tribunal has declared a payment of $12.22 per tonne for sugar cane, scheduled for disbursement to farmers this Friday. This marks the third cane payment for the 2024 season and raises the total to $69.63 per tonne. Earlier payments included $43.06 per tonne and a subsequent payment of $14.35 per tonne.
As of March 28, the net proceeds shared among sugarcane growers have reached $133,937,226. This financial assistance aims to bolster the farming community as they face ongoing challenges related to climate change and volatile market dynamics.
The support provided is part of a broader trend observed in various regions, including recent initiatives in Fiji that reflect a commitment to uplifting the agricultural sector. These payments are essential for farmers as they seek to enhance their operations and secure their livelihoods in the face of adversity.
There is a sense of cautious optimism among farmers as they receive this critical support, which not only aids in their immediate financial needs but also empowers them to invest in the long-term viability of the sugarcane industry. The ongoing assistance demonstrates a collective effort to ensure the sustainability and resilience of this vital agricultural sector.
