Mere Yabakivou, hailing from Nairukuruku Village, transformed her passion for beekeeping into a thriving enterprise known as Yabakivou Liquid Gold. After a career in public health and aviation security, she dedicated herself entirely to bee farming during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on her journey, Yabakivou shares that during a leave from work amid the pandemic, she decided to pursue beekeeping full-time. She began her venture in 2012, navigating through challenges such as equipment shortages by improvising and seeking help from the Agriculture Office in Tavua.
One of the appealing aspects of beekeeping for Yabakivou is that bees require minimal feeding or watering, allowing her to focus on their health by checking on them regularly. What began as a family tradition of enjoying honey has now evolved into a business that is gaining popularity and increasing its prices. She currently sells 500ml bottles of honey for $13 and 1kg for $20.
In a significant development in 2023, Yabakivou officially registered her business and expanded her product line to include beeswax products. Her journey has been supported by the Fiji Beekeepers Association and the Agriculture Ministry, highlighting her dedication and resourcefulness in turning a hobby into a successful venture.
