The Sugar Ministry has launched the New Farmers Scheme and Land Lease Renewal Programme to encourage new entrants into sugarcane farming. Reshmi Kumari, the acting permanent secretary of the ministry, announced that the initiative has a budget of $1 million, which will be available to first-time land buyers engaging in cane farming and to farmers renewing their leases between August 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025.

Under the program, eligible individuals can receive grants covering 30 percent of their costs, up to a maximum of $7,500. Applications for this grant opened on November 1 and will be accepted until April 30 of the following year, with allocations made on a first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify, applicants must purchase at least 10 acres of good arable land suitable for sugarcane planting. This initiative not only aims to boost sugarcane cultivation but also supports sustainable agricultural practices by inviting more farmers into the industry.

This program offers a promising opportunity for individuals interested in sugarcane farming and demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to fostering agricultural growth and sustainability. It is a step towards revitalizing the sugar industry by bringing in fresh talent and investment.
