To inspire more individuals to embark on sugarcane farming, the Sugar Ministry has launched the New Farmers Scheme and Land Lease Renewal Programme. Reshmi Kumari, the acting permanent secretary of the ministry, announced that a budget of $1 million has been earmarked for this initiative. This funding is aimed at both first-time land buyers for sugarcane cultivation and farmers who will have their leases renewed during the period from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025.
Under the program, the ministry will cover 30 percent of the purchase cost of land, with a cap of $7,500 on the grant amount. This financial assistance is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the sugarcane industry and attract new entrants to the farming sector. Applications for the grant are currently open, having started on November 1, and they will remain available until April 30 of the following year.
It’s important to note that the grant will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, making timely application crucial. Additionally, prospective applicants must ensure that the land they purchase spans at least 10 acres, with a good quality suitable for sugarcane planting.
