To promote sugarcane farming among newcomers, the Sugar Ministry has introduced the New Farmers Scheme and Land Lease Renewal Programme. Acting Permanent Secretary Reshmi Kumari announced that the initiative has earmarked $1 million to assist individuals who buy land for sugarcane cultivation for the first time. The grant also targets farmers looking to renew their lease agreements between August 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025.

The program will cover 30% of the purchase cost, capped at $7,500, whichever amount is lower. Applications for this grant opened on November 1 and will remain accessible until April 30 of the upcoming year, with assistance being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify for the grant, applicants must secure at least 10 acres of viable agricultural land suitable for sugarcane planting.

This new initiative could rejuvenate the sugar industry by bringing in fresh talent and investment, ultimately supporting economic growth in the agricultural sector. It reflects a commitment to fostering new agricultural practices and enhancing local farming viability.

In summary, the Sugar Ministry’s new program is a significant step in revitalizing sugarcane farming and has the potential to attract new farmers, ensuring the industry’s sustainability and growth.
