Swami Vivekananda College is determined to reclaim its former glory in swimming as it prepares for the Fiji National Schools Age Group Swimming Championship over the next two days. The college last triumphed in this event seven years ago, taking home the boys’ title and securing second place in the girls’ division.
With a delegation of 36 swimmers, team manager Avika Bakewa reported that training has been going well, expressing their eagerness to demonstrate their capabilities in the pool. “We have been runners-up for a few years, and we aim to shed that status,” Bakewa stated. There’s a strong resolve within the team to secure a victory after such a lengthy drought.
The competition will be held at the Aquatic Centre in Suva, where approximately 700 swimmers from more than 50 schools are expected to participate. The championship not only serves as a platform for athletes to showcase their skills but also offers them a chance to potentially join the national team, a prospect that significantly raises the stakes. This broader context of competition resonates with earlier statements from Salaseini Lele, president of the Fiji Primary and Secondary Schools Swimming Association, who noted that every competitor aims to perform their best to represent Fiji at an international level.
Furthermore, the live broadcast of the championship on Viti+ adds another layer of excitement, allowing fans, fellow students, and swimming enthusiasts to support the athletes during this significant event. This community involvement highlights the growing engagement in youth sports in Fiji, reinforcing the values of sportsmanship and collective encouragement.
As Swami Vivekananda College steps back into the competitive arena, there is not only hope for victory but also a celebration of perseverance, teamwork, and the spirit of youth sports. The anticipation surrounding this event promises to foster personal growth and resilience among all participants.
