Suva’s Yatu Lau Arcade Reopens After $10 Million Makeover

The Yatu Lau Arcade has officially reopened following a substantial renovation that cost $10 million, signaling a vital revival in business activities in Suva. This upgrade is not only transforming the landscape of the arcade but is also poised to provide a range of new economic opportunities for residents.

With 90 business spaces available, a diverse array of tenants, including a dental clinic, various food outlets, and barbershops, are set to commence operations. Currently, only three spaces remain available for lease, highlighting the growing demand for commercial real estate in the area. The renovations are anticipated to create a significant number of new jobs, thereby contributing to the local economy.

Viliame Leqa, Chairman of the Yatu Lau Group, shared insights into the transformation of the arcade, emphasizing that the new design caters to modern commercial needs. “We took a lot of learning from the old arcade… this had previously felt like a lion’s den,” he remarked, noting how the upgrade has radically improved the ambiance and functionality of the complex.

The rental prices have also seen an increase, moving from a range of $1,500 to $2,000 previously, to now between $2,000 and $3,000 per month, reflecting the enhanced facilities. Leqa underscored the commitment to supporting small and medium enterprises, highlighting the opportunity it creates for Lauans to engage actively in business endeavors.

At the reopening ceremony, Tui Lau Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba addressed the importance of the arcade for the Lau Province’s resilience and the increased interest from the iTaukei community in business participation. He acknowledged the challenges faced by local communities, particularly issues like drug use and its detrimental effect on families and youth. He called for a collaborative effort focused on education, preventive measures, and community vigilance to combat these challenges.

The Yatu Lau Arcade is anticipated to be fully operational and accessible to the public by the first quarter of next year, promising renewed vitality to local commerce and community engagement.
