The CEO of the Suva City Council, Tevita Boseiwaqa, has praised the contributions of various communities in addressing waste disposal issues in the Suva region. He emphasized that waste disposal continues to pose a significant threat in the area, with the council having issued over 20 littering notices to date.
Boseiwaqa noted that the Raiwai/Raiwaqa region has been identified as a key area struggling with improper waste disposal. In response, the council has installed additional waste bins, particularly on Bryce Street, to encourage responsible waste management.
“To date, we’ve issued around 21 or 22 notices concerning the careless disposal of waste materials, and we are exploring options to install even more bins, particularly on common driveways where we encounter most issues,” he stated. The council is collaborating closely with the Housing Authority and the Public Rental Board, alongside community members, to tackle the problem effectively.
He added that before issuing littering notices, the council must ascertain the identity of the offenders to ensure accountability. “We cannot issue notices randomly without evidence of wrongdoing. We need to pinpoint the individuals responsible, and only then can we proceed with issuing littering notices,” he explained, highlighting the importance of community feedback in addressing the issue.
