The Suva City Council (SCC) is facing significant challenges in managing waste disposal, largely due to limited funding and rising operational costs. Council CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa revealed that the SCC had requested over $1 million for waste management for the current financial year but was allocated only $400,000, the same amount as the previous year. This shortfall has compelled the council to draw from other revenue sources to maintain essential waste services, which are becoming increasingly costly due to factors like escalating fuel prices and a growing population.
Boseiwaqa highlighted how the rising population and the number of households in Suva lead to increased waste generation, creating a pressing need for adequate waste management support. He noted that this issue extends beyond Suva; other councils across the country are facing similar fiscal challenges in handling waste effectively.
The council has seen a proactive response from the Ministry of Environment, which is working alongside them to promote cleaner environments. Boseiwaqa expressed appreciation for this collaboration, stating, “It’s good to see the ministry coming on board, pushing for cleaner environments.” Despite working with limited resources, the SCC is committed to finding ways to ensure waste management continues efficiently.
In line with previous reports on the waste management crisis in Suva, the SCC has been grappling with a shortage of rubbish trucks, leading to delayed waste collection and accumulating garbage in various neighborhoods, particularly in areas like Bayview Heights. Residents have expressed concern over the health and aesthetic impacts of uncollected waste, noting that it attracts pests and creates unpleasant odors. In response to community grievances, the council is exploring alternative solutions and emphasizing the need for community involvement in waste disposal practices.
Such initiatives and open lines of communication between the SCC and the residents are crucial for improving overall waste management. By fostering a collaborative effort, there remains hope for a sustainable and cleaner future for Suva, emphasizing the importance of our collective responsibility in maintaining a healthy environment.
