The Suva Christian Community Primary School swimming team is preparing for the upcoming Fiji Primary and Secondary Schools Swimming Championships, set to take place at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva over two days. Team manager Vivian Elizabeth Bukalidi expressed the importance of the competition, encouraging her swimmers to represent not just themselves, but also their school and community with pride.

The team consists of 12 swimmers, including eight girls and four boys, reflecting their consistent participation over the years. Training has been rigorous, with a focus on building confidence, discipline, and technique. The swimmers have trained three days a week for the past two months, persisting despite weather challenges and seasonal illnesses.

Bukalidi noted that many team members are experienced competitors, having previously represented the school, while a few are set to compete in nationals for the first time. The selection process involved evaluating the swimmers’ personal bests during the school’s intensive swimming program at the beginning of the year.

The team’s primary goal for the championships remains simple: to do their best. Bukalidi emphasized that the experience of competing is a significant achievement in itself, regardless of whether they win medals. She reminded her swimmers of the honor they carry as representatives of their school and community, which adds an extra layer of motivation.

Challenges such as cold weather and health issues have posed hurdles, but the team’s determination and resilience shine through. Bukalidi expressed gratitude for the strong support from parents and the school, who have contributed to their preparations through logistics, uniforms, and encouragement.

The excitement for the upcoming championships is palpable, as the Suva Christian team looks forward to showcasing their talents and determination. This event not only serves as a competition but also as an opportunity for personal growth and community spirit, reinforcing the values of teamwork and dedication.

With 700 swimmers expected from various schools across Fiji, the championships promise to be a celebration of youth and sportsmanship, reflecting the growing popularity of competitive swimming in the region. This increased interest and participation highlight the positive impact of community support and dedication to youth sports in Fiji.
