More than 50 basketball players from across the Central Division came together today for the Hoops of Giving tournament at Vodafone Arena in Suva. This festive event featured a special requirement for participants to bring gifts as part of their registration, which will be donated to children in need on Christmas Day.
The competition showcased boys and girls in various age groups, ranging from under nine to under 19. Tournament coordinator Marjorie Levaci highlighted the importance of such events, noting that with only one national basketball tournament held annually for these age groups, this tournament serves as a vital opportunity for off-season preparation.
“This is our three-on-three tournament, which includes children in grades under nine, under 11, under 13, under 15, under 17, and under 19. The kids were required to enter with both a fee and a gift, which will be donated to less fortunate children,” Levaci explained.
The tournament was organized by a group known as Bounce Back, comprised of mothers dedicated to encouraging children’s involvement in basketball. Levaci also revealed that their current goal is to formally establish the club, enabling them to host additional tournaments throughout the year.
This tournament not only presents a platform for young athletes to hone their skills but also fosters a spirit of community and generosity, reinforcing the values of giving and teamwork among attendees.
