Suva’s business community is set to enhance security measures with the planned installation of 40 advanced CCTV cameras across the central business district. This initiative, aimed at addressing concerns about a recent surge in crime, was confirmed by Tevita Boseiwaqa, the chairman of the Suva City Council (SCC), who announced that a tender for the project was advertised on January 4, 2025.

The state-of-the-art CCTV system will utilize technology similar to that used in parts of Australia and is designed to detect known offenders already under the scrutiny of the Fiji Police Force. The surveillance will cover critical areas from Nabukalou Bridge to Walu Bay Bridge, effectively monitoring key commercial districts.

Boseiwaqa emphasized that these cameras are equipped with advanced features, including low-light capabilities for night surveillance, enabling them to capture movements and register individuals of interest at all times. There are also plans for a dedicated monitoring station, potentially at the market station or the SCC office, allowing for continuous oversight of the city’s activities.

This proactive approach to security is aligned with broader efforts by the Fiji Police Force to modernize their policing strategies through advanced technologies, including drone surveillance and enhanced CCTV networks. The initiative not only aims to respond quickly to crime but also to prevent it before it occurs, instilling a greater sense of safety within the community.
