Suva’s business community is anticipating improved safety measures as the Suva City Council (SCC) prepares to install 40 advanced CCTV cameras in the central business district. This initiative, aimed at addressing rising crime rates, was confirmed by SCC chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa who announced that a tender for the project was advertised on January 4, 2025.

The new CCTV cameras will feature cutting-edge technology similar to systems used in various Australian cities, allowing them to detect and monitor known offenders already on the radar of the Fiji Police Force. The coverage will extend from Nabukalou Bridge to Walu Bay Bridge, effectively encompassing significant commercial areas and enhancing overall surveillance.

Boseiwaqa emphasized that these cameras can function effectively in low light conditions, enabling them to capture movement and register individuals of interest at all times. A dedicated monitoring station will be established at either the market station or the SCC office, ensuring continuous surveillance of the city and a swift police response to any illegal activities.

This CCTV initiative aligns with ongoing efforts by the Fiji Police Force to modernize policing strategies, incorporating advanced technologies to improve crime detection and prevention. By leveraging modern surveillance capabilities, the police aim not only to respond swiftly to crimes but also to proactively prevent them, fostering a safer environment for both businesses and residents.

Work on the installation of these cameras is expected to be completed by the end of January, inspiring hope within the community that these advancements will lead to a decline in crime rates and a greater sense of security for all.

In summary, the introduction of the CCTV network in Suva marks a significant step forward in enhancing public safety, potentially paving the way for a more secure urban space conducive to thriving business operations and community well-being.
