The rich cultural heritage and vibrant spirit of Suva have inspired Semantafa Naomi Lavulo-Samisoni to compete for the title of Miss Hibiscus 2024. Sponsored by the local fashion label Hefrani, the 27-year-old graphic designer is among ten contestants in the running for this prestigious title during the festival’s 68th anniversary.

Semantafa has a deep affection for Suva, which is tied closely to her family’s history in the city. Although she now lives in Nadi, Suva remains a beloved place filled with cherished memories. Her parents both grew up in Suva, making her childhood visits to the city especially meaningful. She recalls joyful moments spent painting with her uncle, playing with cousins, and competing in various sports, including swimming, hockey, squash, and paddling.

The memories of playing card games with her grandparents and gathering with family at her uncle’s house are particularly special to her. She fondly remembers the lively atmosphere in Suva, always bustling with excitement, and one of her favorite activities was cruising along the seawall at sunset while watching families exercise and children play rugby and basketball.

The impressive aquatic center and hockey turf have left a lasting impression on her, as they offered experiences she had not encountered in Nadi. Semantafa also holds “Rotuma Day” in high regard, reflecting on the emotional experience of witnessing her family partake in traditional dances. Her mother’s family has a blend of Tongan and Chinese Fijian roots, enhancing the cultural experience she feels during her visits.

Her journey into modeling began at Fiji Fashion Week in Suva, a pivotal moment that bolstered her confidence. The trendsetting community in Suva, known for its artistic expression through painting, dancing, singing, and tailoring, has greatly inspired her. She expressed, “The sense of community and the rich culture of my family in Suva made me feel like I truly belonged. This city, with its constant activity and deep family ties, will always be a place I love dearly.”

The upcoming festival will be held at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7, promising a celebration of tradition, culture, and community. With FMF and Vodafone as the Gold Sponsors, this year’s festival is expected to be a memorable occasion.
