The rich cultural heritage and vibrant community of Suva have inspired Semantafa Naomi Lavulo-Samisoni to compete for the 2024 Miss Hibiscus title. Sponsored by the local fashion brand Hefrani, the 27-year-old graphic designer is one of ten contestants vying for the prestigious title during the festival’s 68th anniversary.

Semantafa has a deep affection for Suva, closely tied to her family’s history in the city. Though she currently lives in Nadi, Suva holds a special place in her heart as it is filled with cherished memories. Her parents grew up in Suva, and her childhood holidays were spent exploring the lively city.

She reminisces about painting with her uncle, playing with her cousins, and participating in sports competitions such as swimming, hockey, squash, and paddling. For her, Suva was a source of joy and familial bonding.

She fondly remembers playing card games with her grandparents and attending family gatherings at her uncle’s home. “Suva always had something exciting happening,” she recalled. One of her favorite activities was taking afternoon drives along the seawall, where she admired the sunset while observing families exercising and students playing rugby and basketball.

The impressive aquatic center and hockey turf in Suva made a strong impression on her, as they were unlike anything available in Nadi. Semantafa also expressed a deep emotional connection to Rotuma Day, particularly watching her family partake in traditional dances.

Her mother’s side of the family, with their Tongan and Chinese Fijian heritage, has deep roots in Suva, which contributes to the cultural richness she experiences during her visits. Her first modeling opportunity at Fiji Fashion Week in Suva marked a turning point in her life, boosting her confidence. The trendsetting spirit of Suva’s residents inspires her, as they continuously express themselves through various art forms, including painting, dancing, singing, and tailoring.

“The sense of community and the rich culture of my family in Suva made me feel like I truly belonged. This city, with its constant activity and deep family ties, will always be a place I love dearly,” she stated.

The Miss Hibiscus festival is scheduled to take place at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7, promising a celebration of tradition, culture, and community. With FMF and Vodafone as the Gold Sponsors, this year’s festival is set to be a memorable occasion.
