Suva’s Heart: Meet the Miss Hibiscus Hopeful Celebrating Culture and Community

The cultural heritage and active community of Suva have inspired Semantafa Naomi Lavulo-Samisoni, a 27-year-old graphic designer, to compete for the 2024 Miss Hibiscus title. Sponsored by the local fashion designer brand Hefrani, she is one of ten contestants contending for the prestigious title at the festival’s 68th anniversary.

Semantafa’s deep affection for Suva is connected to her family’s rich history in the city. Although she currently lives in Nadi, Suva holds a special place in her heart, filled with cherished memories. Her parents grew up in Suva, and her childhood holidays were often spent in this vibrant city.

She reminisces about painting with her uncle, playing with her cousins, and competing in swimming, hockey, squash, and paddling events. For Semantafa, Suva was a source of joy and family activities. She fondly recalls playing card games with her grandparents and attending family gatherings at her uncle’s home.

“Suva always had something exciting happening,” she reflected. One of her favorite leisure activities included afternoon drives along the seawall, where she enjoyed watching families exercise and students play rugby and basketball against the backdrop of stunning sunsets.

The expansive swimming pool at the aquatic center and the nearby hockey turf made a lasting impression on her, distinct from what she experienced in Nadi. “Rotuma Day holds a special place in my heart,” she shared, recalling the emotional moments of seeing her family engage in traditional dances.

Her mother’s family, with their diverse Tongan and Chinese Fijian heritage, also grew up in Suva, enhancing the cultural richness she experiences during her visits. Semantafa’s first modeling opportunity at Fiji Fashion Week in Suva was a turning point in her life, boosting her confidence. The local community, known for embracing the latest trends and artistic expressions, inspired her through various forms of art, including painting, dancing, singing, and tailoring.

“The sense of community and the vibrant culture of my family in Suva made me feel like I truly belonged. This city, with its dynamic atmosphere and strong family connections, will always hold a special place in my heart,” she stated.

The upcoming festival is scheduled to take place at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7, promising a celebration of tradition, culture, and community. With FMF and Vodafone as Gold Sponsors, this year’s event is expected to be particularly memorable.
