Suva’s business owners can look forward to improved safety measures with the installation of 40 advanced CCTV cameras throughout the central business district, addressing growing concerns about a crime wave. Tevita Boseiwaqa, chairman of the Suva City Council (SCC), announced that the tender for this significant project was publicly advertised on January 4, 2025.

The state-of-the-art CCTV cameras will utilize technology similar to systems found in various Australian cities, enabling them to detect known offenders already on the Fiji Police Force’s radar. The cameras will cover essential areas from Nabukalou Bridge to Walu Bay Bridge, ensuring comprehensive surveillance across the city’s commercial hubs.

Boseiwaqa detailed the advanced capabilities of these cameras, which include low-light functionality to monitor movement and track individuals of interest, effectively bolstering the city’s security infrastructure. A dedicated monitoring station will be established, most likely at either the market station or the SCC office, allowing police to conduct continuous oversight of urban activities and respond swiftly to illegal activities.

This CCTV initiative aligns with broader efforts by the Fiji Police Force to modernize their policing strategies, incorporating advanced technology to enhance crime detection and prevention. The collaboration between the SCC and police represents a proactive approach to fostering a secure environment for both businesses and residents.

Work on implementing this security upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of January, fostering hope within the community that crime rates will decrease and that streets will feel safer. This comprehensive surveillance system signifies a crucial step towards ensuring a more secure urban space in Suva, instilling confidence among traders and the public alike.

In summary, the installation of advanced CCTV cameras in Suva promises to be a transformative move toward enhancing public safety, with the potential for significant reductions in crime and increased peace of mind for the community.
