Effective waste management in Suva demands a collaborative effort between the Suva City Council (SCC) and the local community. This sentiment was emphasized by Council Chair Tevita Boseiwaqa as he addressed persistent waste challenges along the Suva-Nausori corridor. He pointed out that inadequate waste management practices contribute significantly to the accumulation of rubbish in the area.
Mr. Boseiwaqa acknowledged the council’s substantial initiatives this year aimed at cleaning up the streets of Suva but stressed the importance of community involvement in sustaining a clean environment. “We can identify the solutions — that’s our 50 percent commitment as the Suva City Council,” he explained, adding that the remaining 50 percent relies on community engagement. “Achieving a clean Suva is simply unattainable without the backing of our residents,” he stated.
The council has been focusing its efforts on specific locales, such as Raiwai, providing additional bins and launching targeted clean-up campaigns. However, there are still ongoing challenges, particularly concerning residents’ waste disposal behaviors.
Looking ahead to the festive season, Mr. Boseiwaqa mentioned plans to increase waste collection efforts. While this year has included some community discussions, he indicated a more vigorous approach will be initiated in 2024 to enhance community involvement.
Expressing optimism for the future, Mr. Boseiwaqa noted that the council has made commendable progress in organizing its staff and operations. “From January, we should be able to advance and achieve significant improvements,” he expressed.
