The acting CEO of Suva City Council, Tevita Boseiwaqa, recently announced plans to expedite renovations for the city’s bus stand and market area, aiming for completion by December. This initiative is part of the council’s broader ‘bridge to bridge’ project, which encompasses enhancements from the Walu Bay Bridge to the Nabukalou Bridge, thereby including the bus stand and market.
Acknowledging the deteriorating condition of roads near the west bus stand, Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized that the project would be implemented in phases. He highlighted that an integrated approach was being taken, which involves engaging with local business owners to improve the aesthetics of the area. Notably, the Carpenters Group is already taking steps by erecting a fence at the first bridge in Walu Bay, signaling a commitment from local businesses to contribute to the beautification efforts.
The SCC is prioritizing upgrades to both the bus stand and market, with plans for painting and general maintenance to enhance the area’s appearance. Mr. Boseiwaqa mentioned that community engagement is vital, particularly involving youth groups, who have expressed interest in participating in the beautification efforts. These groups will be compensated for their labor, aiding both their development and the local environment.
Negotiations are also underway with the Fiji Roads Authority to secure a contractor for the project, which is funded by the current fiscal budget spanning until July 2025. Initial funding of over $100,000 has been allocated for the immediate improvements at the bus stand, with hopes to address potential delays and aim for completion by February next year.
This initiative not only addresses infrastructure needs but also fosters community involvement, encouraging local youth to take part in enhancing their environment. As the project progresses, it presents a hopeful vision for a revitalized Suva, uplifting its aesthetic appeal and fostering community spirit.
