Tevita Boseiwaqa, the acting chief executive officer (CEO) of Suva City Council, has been identified as the highest-paid municipal leader in Fiji, according to salary disclosures shared in Parliament by the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. Boseiwaqa’s annual salary is set at $159,386, a figure established by the Higher Salaries Commission.
This information emerged during an update regarding the salaries of acting CEOs at various municipal councils across Fiji, following inquiries made in Parliament. Currently, both Suva City Council and other councils such as Nasinu Town Council and Tavua Town Council are functioning under special administrators who are serving in the capacity of acting CEOs.
The report outlined that the salaries for acting CEOs in these councils are determined by incorporating 95 percent of the difference between the Special Administrator’s salary and the base salary designated for the CEO position. According to the latest update, Felix Magnus, the acting CEO of Nasinu Town Council, earns an annual salary of $79,549.80, while Sireli Korovulavula, acting CEO of Tavua Town Council, is receiving a temporary annual allowance of $12,000, awaiting final approval from the Higher Salaries Commission for his complete salary.
Collectively, these three councils are allocating $183,055.66 for acting CEO salaries, in addition to $26,252 set aside for allowances covering official vehicles, mobile phones, internet, and travel for official duties. Mr. Nalumisa further clarified that new positions such as executive chairs, referenced in previous discussions, have not been established, as the ministry does not sanction new roles within municipal council structures.
This situation highlights ongoing changes within municipal leadership in Fiji, showcasing the fiscal decisions made by council administrations. As Fiji progresses, there may be opportunities for further transparency and adjustments in municipal governance that can enhance administrative efficiency and community engagement.
In summary, the salaries of municipal leaders in Fiji, particularly acting CEOs, have been brought to light, illustrating a significant wage disparity among them and raising questions about resource allocation in local governance. This development could lead to discussions on improving municipal operations and ensuring better representation of citizens’ interests.
