The 2024/2025 Suva Women’s League cricket championship resumed at Albert Park in Suva yesterday, marking the fourth round of an exciting season. After a break for Christmas and New Year, eight teams are facing off under favorable weather conditions, creating a vibrant atmosphere for both players and spectators.

Cricket Fiji president Sitiveni Rokoro noted that the competitive level in the tournament is intensifying as only two rounds remain before the Suva teams clash with their Western adversaries from Nadi. “It’s a round robin competition, and the top two teams will advance to compete against the finalists from Nadi,” Rokoro explained, emphasizing the tournament’s crucial role in selecting the national team for upcoming international events.

This league not only serves as a platform for local talent but also prepares the teams for the upcoming Four Nations tournament scheduled for March in New Caledonia, organized by Cricket France. The anticipation surrounding the eventual encounters between the Suva and Nadi teams heightens local interest in women’s cricket, further enhancing the sport’s profile in the region.

In addition to the Suva league, there are ongoing matches in Nadi with four participating teams. The overall development in women’s cricket signifies positive growth, and Fiji will also be hosting the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier later this year, involving teams from Japan, Indonesia, and other Pacific nations, aiming for a spot in the 2026 Women’s World Cup.

The Suva Women’s League, along with these future tournaments, showcases the increasing investment in women’s cricket in Fiji, fostering an environment conducive to nurturing talent. As we look forward, both players and fans can anticipate an exhilarating chapter in Fijian cricket.

Summary: The Suva Women’s League cricket championship has resumed, intensifying as teams prepare for upcoming matches against Nadi and the Four Nations tournament. With positive growth in women’s cricket and the upcoming ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier, Fiji is poised for an impactful year in the sport.
