The SUVA Warriors cricket team triumphed in the 2025 National Easter Cricket tournament, ending the reign of defending champions Kabara with a seven-wicket victory at Albert Park. The Suva team, largely composed of Army Cricket Club members, successfully chased down Kabara’s total of 135 runs in just 16.1 overs, demonstrating impressive performance despite little formal preparation.

Captain Makutu Seru noted that the team had only gathered for practice two days prior to the tournament due to work commitments. “We didn’t have any preparation, but we communicated that our experience and mutual belief could carry us through,” he stated. This tournament marked Seru’s return after missing the previous year and his leadership contributed significantly to the team’s success.

The victory resonates deeply within the team, many of whom have played together since primary school. “This win is special… that long bond helped us rebuild our connection on the field,” Seru reflected. The supportive home crowd played a crucial role in the team’s morale, reinforcing their determination to succeed.

The seven-day tournament featured 15 teams divided into two tiers, with the Suva Warriors emerging as the champions in Tier One. Seru expressed hope that this victory would inspire a revival of the Suva cricket competition, which has been dormant this year. “This victory is for all our Suva players and fans. We’ll celebrate this one,” he promised, emphasizing the importance of community and local support in their journey.

In a broader context, the win reflects the potential of Suva cricket, even amid limited resources. Many players had previously represented Fiji, including trips abroad, showcasing their talent and experience that ultimately contributed to this recent success. The article underscores the significance of fostering a strong cricket culture within the community, paving the way for future development of the sport in Fiji.
